This unit focuses on modals, passive voice, relative clauses and phrasal verbs. Modal auxiliary verbs are used before other verbs to add meaning to the main verb, it also expresses different degrees of formality. When using passive voice there are two kinds; the active voice and the passive voice. When using the passive voice the 'agent' the doer of the action is not so important, the focus is on the subject not the agent. When using the active voice the focus is on the agent (doer). A relative clause is introduced by a relative pronoun and there are two types of relative clauses; defining and non-defining. A defining relative clause is essential to the meaning of the sentence and a non-defining relative clause is not essential to the meaning of the sentence. Clauses are a group of words containing a subject and a verb. There are three categories of clauses: independent clause, dependent clause and relative clause. Phrasal verbs (multi-verbs), consist of a verb plus one or two particles. There are three basic types of phrasal verbs; type 1 - intransitive, type 2 - transitive separable, type 3 - transitive inseparable. What I learnt is to use as many of the above names in natural uncontrolled sentences in class, this will help the students to become more familiar with them and to use them naturally.
