Another lesson in how a person who has been speaking a language for over 50 years can know so little about it. As with the chapter on Present Tenses (which I failed), this chapter on Past Tenses seemed so easy at first. After all, the past is the past, right? Not so. I had to look at each sentence and dissect what happened in the past, what was happening at the present time and what was going to happen in the future. Was the action completely finished before another action began? Were both actions going on at the same time? Did one action stop and another begin? I love teaching English and I do it well. However, I do not enjoy the mechanics of the English language and having to think about why something is said a certain way. I know when it is wrong, but until now, I did not know why. I am a writer, a voracious reader, and a teacher. I say and write what comes naturally to me. If I find the past perfect continuous tense to be confusing I have a new appreciation for my students. At least now I know that there is no rule to irregular simple past verbs and my students need to just memorize them. Thank you for causing my brain to implode.
