The unit looks at four general student learning and development theories, Environmentalist, Maturationists, Constructionist and others. There are many different theories but all fall under these four categories. The unit also looks at language learning (things being taught) versus language acquisition (skills acquired through immersion in the language.) Finally the unit helps one to understand different approaches and key points when working with learners age five to nine and those age six to thirteen, both groups have need special focus points. Five to nines enjoy singing and using their imagination and make believe, the older group prefers peer interaction and avoid speaking in front of others. Knowing the likes and dislikes of the particular age groups will help the teacher have greater impact in the learning process.
