Uruguay is South America’s hidden gem, known for its relaxed lifestyle and widely considered one of the most stable nations in South America. Whether you want a city that’s rich in history and culture, rural areas filled with nature and high-quality wineries, or charming, picturesque beach towns, you’ll find a laid-back vibe, high quality of life, and friendly, welcoming communities.
Montevideo, Uruguay’s capital, is filled with charm has a charming, old-world feel. Located near the coast, it boasts a waterfront promenade, or rambla, that stretches 13 miles long. Along the rambla, you’ll see locals walking, running, socializing, and enjoying sunsets. The Ciudad Vieja, or the Old City, is Montevideo’s historic quarter, which is filled with cafes, museums, theatres, outdoor markets, and colonial architecture. It’s also home to the Mercado del Puerto, an indoor food market that’s not to be missed, especially for meat lovers looking for a parrilla (grill).
Though you’ll recognize European influences, Uruguay has a strong local identity. Some of its passions are music, including tango and candombe, Carnaval, which is the longest in the world, and futbol, a national obsession. Uruguayan beef is considered by many to be the best in the world, and mate, a traditional herbal drink made from the dried leaves of the yerba mate plant, is everywhere—it’s a tea, ritual, and form of social bonding all in one. Uruguayans are typically very friendly and engaging.
The cost of living in Uruguay is reasonable, and transportation is reliable. Montevideo has a public bus system that is well-developed and reliable, connecting nearly all the city’s neighborhoods. Buses are inexpensive, and run frequently from early morning until late at night. Taxis and ride-share apps such as Uber and Cabify are also good transportation options; they are widely available, safe, and reasonably priced. The country is easy to navigate; in fact, it’s small enough that you can visit a beach, the countryside, and a winery all in the same day.
